FDA Warns of Web Sites Selling Bogus Drugs
Tuesday, May 22, 2007; HE08

Consumer, beware! Buying prescription medications online may save money -- but the Food and Drug Administration released a warning early this month cautioning that "24 apparently related Web sites" may be distributing counterfeit prescription drugs.

Marv Shepherd, director of the pharmacoeconomics center at the University of Texas at Austin, said there may be thousands of Web sites selling counterfeit medications, many located outside the United States, where regulation is typically less strict. "The problem is, you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys" when buying drugs online, Shepherd said.

Three consumers recently purchased counterfeit Xenical (used for weight loss) on two sites -- Brandpills.com and Pillspharm.com, according to the FDA. None of the medications contained orlistat, the active ingredient in Xenical, and one contained sibutramine, the active ingredient in Meridia, another weight-loss drug, the FDA reports.

Substituting one ingredient for another creates a potentially dangerous situation. The "drug interactions profile is different between Xenical and sibutramine, as is the dosing frequency," the FDA reports.

The two Web sites involved are associated with Pharmacycall365.com -- which listed the two sites, as well as 22 others, under its "Our Websites" heading. (To see a list of the 24 sites, go to http://www.fda.gov and search for "pharmacy365.")

The FDA offers the following tips for determining whether an online retailer is safe:

· Stick with U.S.-based sites.

· Buy only from licensed pharmacies.....

The 24 Web sites appear on pharmacycall365.com" it lists all the sites.

brandpills went offline right in front of my eyes in fact -- while taking a little looksee at the panama address on the site -- it went totally dead. i for one am happy to see fakers scammers who don't provide legit medicines removed from the market place. Consumers deserve high quality legit medicines not fraudulent products.

Hi,

I'm Dan - part of the affiliate support team of Brandpills.com

We have had some orders for Xenical sent from a supplier that went bad. When we realized that the products were bad, we've immediately stopped working with that supplier and made every effort to compensate the customers.

While we made sure the customers are happy, and have tightened checks on suppliers the news still got out to the papers. And that's the whole story.

We've been online for 4 years now, with many thousands of happy customers and affiliates.

Judge for yourself.

Is that all you've got, Whoops? That's more than just a little fuckup. You gave the FDA, a whole novel worth of bullshit, to beat the industry over the head with. Secondly, not the first time you fucked up. The press cited other cases of you shipping shit.

Did you know that internet pharmacies have an almost flawless record on accidental dispensing. You've got balls. You've cost everyone out here business and maybe in the end, their business. Go away. Stay away from telemedicine. It's not just the money, your dealing with peoples lives.

Passing off a substandard product - is just plain stupid as well as wrong and any instance severely damages the whole industry.

However, remember that xenical essentially works with similar outcome as a laxative. Many developed nations put xenical in a category of non prescription asprin, available off the supermarket shelves.

Wrong is wrong and should not be tolerated. Stupid because xenical is hardly a product that is going to make money online so why bother with the risk of passing off - but some perspective and common sense does not go astray in reporting.
