What type of money can you make as an SEO firm?
I guess I am just trying to figure out what sort of fees you would charge smaller clients that are running small businesses?

Sky is the limit if you are sure about your capability when it comes to ranking for highly competitive and most spammed for keywords like "online casino" or "debt consolidation" andyou should have the proven ability to maintain your rankings month after month.
When it comes to smaller businesses, a vast majority of them simply don't know the benefits of SEO. Many of themstart withPPC campaigns because PPC is all about instant gratification and you can prove they have ROI on PPC campaigns making it worth looking at. If you are looking at small business then you should go for a combination of SEO and SEM.
Bottomline is it is very difficult to make a small business (less than US$2million/year revenue) that is used to get all the revenue from brick and mortar avenues, have a good look at SEO as a medium for sale.
Post your question on webmasterworld and you will get some interesting answers there.

I am currently more of a SEO expert than a drug affiliate expert, but Phalaris is right, gaining a relationship with larger secure company is the best thing to do. It is harder for these smaller companies to see value in your services considering the amounts you may be charging. They commonly hire you thining that you will be some miracle worker for their businesses bottomline instead of understanding you as another source of media advertising

Another thing is traditional small businesses fail to accept that SEO is a battle that you fight continuously to stay ahead in the rankings. Most of them (if they hire a SEO to build a decent online presence) think "OK, I am number 2 for the keyword I'm supposed to be targeting in google and I'm getting the traffic and sales, so now I don't needSEO anymore or I don't need to pay him as much, as I was doing before, from now on."

thanks for the responses.
I still have a lot to learn since I have neglected learning any SEO beyond the basics (which was a big mistake).

Actually you can do just fine as an independent SEO. Problem is your client expects you to be there 24/7 and I just irritated as I have to drop whatever I am doing and go fix some minor problem. I stopped taking clients for this reason.
